CTM Video

Curtis borrowed Elder Allred's camcorder and made us a video of the CTM. He showed us the view from his window on the sixth floor and explained all the buildings that surround the CTM. He told a story about the rain and thunder and how forceful it is in Brazil. He introduced us to his companion, Elder Hirschi. He also introduced us to his roommates and some other missionaries. They all seem like really good guys. He took us on a tour of the CTM and tossed candy out of the window onto the rooftop below. It is nice to see him and know that he is doing well.

It was amazing that we got to watch this DVD at all. It wouldn't play on the DVD player or my computer. I had to go to Circuit City, play it in their camcorder, and have it dubbed to VHS tape. Give me a call if you would like to see it.

District 5B

The missionaries at the CTM (Center for Training Missionaries) are organized into districts according to the week that they enter the CTM. Curtis arrived at the Brazil CTM during the 5th week of 2005 and was placed in the second group "B". His companion is Elder Hirschi. Some of his better friends are Elder Johnson from Sandy, Elder Shaw from West Jordan, Elder Lilljenquist from Sandy, and Elder Ferguson from Heber City. "They are all way cool guys and im gonna miss them when they split up in the field."

Meeting An Apostle

Curtis was able to shake hands, talk and meet with Elder Russell M. Nelson of the Quorum Of The 12 Apostles.
"It was so awesome, he told me good luck and stuff, and I think it was the best part of the mission so far."

Elder Nelson gave the following blessing to the CTM missionaries:
“I invoke a blessing upon you that you will feast upon the doctrine of the Lord. That you will be sweet, loving and kind and that you will have health and strength. I bless you to love your companions, and that you will be obedient to your mission president. We are engaged in the work of the Lord. We are sent to gather Israel.”

Elder Russell M. Nelson has served as a member of the Council of the Twelve Apostles since April 1984. Elder Nelson's Church callings have included stake president, general president of the Sunday School, and regional representative.

One Month

Curtis has been gone a month now and his time at the CTM is half over. I've received a couple of letters from him in the last two weeks and he also wrote his sisters. They were excited to hear from him.

He has a very busy schedule - 11 1/2 hours of study time each day. His favorite day is Sunday; all he does is church stuff: meetings, devotional, naps, and free time. Sometimes he plays volleyball in the gym. The Portuguese is coming along good although it took two hours to write one page of Portuguese. He is learning the "Preach My Gospel" book and practices with his companion, Elder Hirschi. He really likes both of his teachers.

He is excited to start serving his mission in the Sao Paulo East area. The missionaries take the bus to the Campinas Temple but it is west of the CTM so he has not seen his mission area yet. He says his area is on the poor side of the city. It should humble him and make him feel grateful for what he has.

He's not too thrilled with the cafeteria food. It's good about 1/3 of the time. Elder Stephens wrote to him from the mission field and said that the food is much better away from the CTM. His P-day is on Wednesday, another favorite day of the week. He needs more t-shirts and made a request for specific ones. I mailed them to him yesterday.

I think that Curtis is adapting well to being away from home. I can tell that he misses some things such as his music and the food he likes. I need to write him some paper letters. He has made mention of this twice. I'd better get busy. They take about two weeks to get to Brazil and he'll be out of the CTM in a month.

Keeping In Touch

I spoke with the mother of one of Curtis' friends today. She said that Curtis has sent her son a letter and that her daughter had received an audio tape from him. I guess he's keeping in touch with his friends. I remember when his friends left for their missions. Curtis was always concerned about writing letters to them. I hope that they are writing to him.
